Thame

Thame – the village of famous Sherpa Climbers!

Thame (थामे) is a historic Sherpa village in Namche VDC, Solukhumbu District, Nepal. Along with its neighboring settlement, Thameteng (Upper Thame), it was once the last year-round village on the ancient salt trade route connecting Tibet, Nepal, and India.

Thame is known for its rich mountaineering heritage and is home to legendary Sherpa climbers like Apa Sherpa and Kami Rita Sherpa. It was also the childhood home of Tenzing Norgay, the first person to summit Everest alongside Sir Edmund Hillary. Additionally, Thame is the birthplace of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the revered Lawudo Lama and head of the FPMT.

The village is also famous for the historic Thame Monastery, one of the oldest in the Khumbu region, which hosts the vibrant Mani Rimdu festival. In 1995, a small hydropower plant with a 600 kW capacity was established near Thame, operated by the Khumbu Bijuli Company, providing electricity to the region.

Thame remains a culturally rich and scenic destination, offering trekkers a glimpse into Sherpa traditions, Buddhist heritage, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. There are many lodges and is a good spot for staying on the way to Renjo La Pass.
