Lukla is a vibrant village located in the Khumbu region of the Solukhumbu District in Nepal, at an altitude of 2,860 meters (9,383 feet). It is the primary gateway to the Everest region, serving as the starting point for trekkers heading toward Everest Base Camp (EBC) and other iconic destinations like Gokyo Lakes. The village is most famous for its Tenzing-Hillary Airport (Lukla Airport), one of the highest-altitude airports in the world, where trekkers arrive by small aircraft from Kathmandu. The airport’s short and challenging runway makes it a unique and thrilling experience for visitors.

Despite its small size, Lukla is a bustling hub, offering everything trekkers need before starting their journey into the Himalayas. The village is home to well-established lodges and inns, providing comfortable resting spots for travelers. There are also shops, internet cafes, and coffee houses, offering a mix of modern amenities and traditional Sherpa culture. Over time, Lukla has developed into a commercial center due to the influx of trekkers, mountaineers, and visitors each year.

The name Lukla translates to “the area for goats and sheep,” reflecting the village’s rural roots. Today, it remains the most popular and accessible starting point for treks in the Everest region, offering a gateway to some of the world’s most stunning mountain landscapes and trekking routes.
