Chukhung

Gateway to the High Himalayas and Peak Adventures

Chukhung is a small, picturesque village located at an altitude of 4,730 meters (15,518 feet) in the Khumbu region of Nepal, near the Everest Base Camp trek. It is situated in the Imja Valley, and serves as a key stop for trekkers who wish to further explore the region and make an ascent to Island Peak or Lhotse. Chukhung lies on the route between Dingboche and the Everest Base Camp, and is often used as a base for trekkers looking to undertake peak climbing or gain better acclimatization before heading to higher altitudes.

The village is surrounded by stunning views of some of the most impressive peaks in the region, including Island Peak, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Chukhung is quieter and more remote than some of the other more well-known villages along the EBC trek, providing trekkers with a sense of peace and isolation amid the towering Himalayas.

Chukhung’s role in the trekking circuit is crucial for those attempting to summit Island Peak (6,189 meters), a popular climbing peak in the region. The village offers a number of teahouses and lodges that serve as resting points for trekkers and climbers preparing for their ascents.

The surrounding Imja Glacier and its glacial moraines add a rugged charm to Chukhung, while the village itself retains the traditional Sherpa culture. It serves as a vital stop for trekkers looking to explore higher altitudes and discover the quieter, more remote side of the Everest region. Chukhung’s stunning scenery and relatively peaceful environment make it a memorable part of the Everest trek experience.
