Namche Primary School, officially known as Shree Himalaya Basic School, is a community-focused educational institution located in Namche Bazaar, Nepal. Established in 1957 with the support of the New Zealand Himalayan Trust and government funding, it has been one of the oldest and most important schools in the Everest region.

Location and Environment

  • Situated at approximately 3,440 meters above sea level.

  • Located in the heart of Namche Bazaar.

  • Serves students from surrounding mountain villages, some of whom walk for several hours to attend.

  • Offers classes from Nursery to Grade 10.

  • Children range from 3.5 to 11 years old.

  • A hostel called “Home Away From Home” is available for students from remote areas who live too far to commute daily.

  • 3 teachers are funded by the government, while the rest are supported by local and private contributions.

School Facilities

  • Classrooms are decorated with handmade educational materials and paintings on the walls.

  • Students wear school uniforms, often layered with warm clothing in winter.

  • The school remains closed during January and February due to extreme cold.

  • In colder months like March and April, students attend classes wearing jackets, hats, and gloves.

  • Every Friday afternoon, students take part in additional activities such as:

    • Nepali music and dance

    • Storytelling and literature sessions

    • Games and creative exercises

Support and Development

  • The school receives support from the local community and donors.

  • Past donations have included stationery, classroom furniture, and digital learning tools like tablets with educational apps.
