Located at an altitude of 3,840 meters in the picturesque village of Khunde, Khunde Hospital is a vital healthcare institution serving the people of the Khumbu region in Nepal. Established in 1966 by Sir Edmund Hillary, the hospital was built in response to a direct request from the local Sherpa community — and continues to be a beacon of hope for thousands in this remote, high-altitude region.

In November 2023, Khunde Hospital expanded its services with the launch of a dedicated Eye Clinic — a project in partnership with Eyes4Everest and Himalayan Trust Nepal. The clinic:

  • Provides primary eye care for residents and visitors in Sagarmatha National Park

  • Is equipped with modern ophthalmic equipment

  • Offers:

    • Vision screening

    • Cataract surgery

    • Other basic eye treatments

  • Staffed seasonally by:

    • An ophthalmic technician (in peak seasons)

    • A trained nurse (off-season)
