Khumjung Dhumji

Dumji is a significant Sherpa festival in Nepal, primarily celebrated in the Khumbu (Everest region) and Solu-Khumbu regions. It honors Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism, and is a time for community bonding, religious rituals, and cultural performances.

The festival usually takes place in June/July, with dates varying slightly by location. It is observed in Five days where two hosting families are responsible for each day every year there are ten houses of each families also known as” lawa” are responsible for conducting this festival.

Within the five days The villagers gather in each lawas home and help them to carry or transport rice and different goods to the monastery. The hosting families are in charge of providing food, drinks to the villagers.

On the first day of the festival , the villagers gather in the monastery and the lawas distribute per mana of rice to each members of the family.

The second day is the same as the previous day but it consists of worships and a monk dance is performed.

On the third day, different monk dances such as Chaym, Sungmar, Khing ,Etongtong etc are performed by the young monks by wearing their colorful costumes with welding swords and various masks. There is also a jingsang event which means a huge fire ceremony and has belief of spreading peace and victory.

Fourth day is known as “Logpar”which is to ward off evil spirits and devils from the village . 

As the celebration come to a close , the head monk provides blessings to everyone. An interesting , delightful play is performed which makes everyone laughter and fun. At the night announcement of next year’s lawas is done and as the duties of the previous lawas have completed they all remain happy and graceful. At the end the is a whole night party.
