Reaching the Gokyo Lakes

 

The trek from Machermo to Gokyo is a rewarding stretch, leading you to the stunning Gokyo Lakes and the Gokyo Valley. The journey is filled with breathtaking scenery and alpine beauty.

  • Elevation at Machermo: 4,470 meters (14,663 feet)

  • Elevation at Gokyo: 4,790 meters (15,715 feet)

  • Distance: 7.5 km (4.7 miles)

  • Elevation Gain: +320 meters (1,050 feet)

  • Trek Duration: 4–5 hours

The trek begins with a steady ascent through a rocky landscape dotted with small alpine shrubs. As you make your way along the path, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Cho Oyu, Everest, and other surrounding peaks. The trail takes you past several smaller lakes as you approach the Gokyo Lakes, a group of sacred high-altitude lakes that are among the most beautiful sights in the region.

As you near Gokyo, the landscape becomes more serene, with the turquoise waters of the Gokyo Lakes contrasting against the backdrop of towering peaks. Gokyo is a peaceful village, home to a few teahouses, where trekkers can rest and take in the stunning views of the surrounding glaciers and mountains.

Reaching Gokyo marks a significant milestone in the trek, and you’ll have the opportunity to explore the lakes and prepare for the ascent to Gokyo Ri the next day for some of the best panoramic views in the Everest region.
