Gorak Shep to Pheriche – Morning Hike to Kalapatthar

Most rewarding Views

This day is a combination of one of the most rewarding hikes and a descent to a lower altitude to help with acclimatization. First, you’ll make the early morning hike to Kalapatthar for the best panoramic views of Everest, then head back down to Pheriche.

  • Elevation at Gorak Shep: 5,164 meters (16,942 feet)

  • Elevation at Kalapatthar: 5,545 meters (18,192 feet)

  • Elevation at Pheriche: 4,371 meters (14,340 feet)

  • Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)

  • Elevation Gain: +381 meters (1,250 feet) to Kalapatthar

  • Trek Duration: 7–8 hours (including the Kalapatthar hike)

Your day begins early with a steep climb from Gorak Shep to Kalapatthar. This challenging ascent takes about 2-3 hours, but the reward is well worth the effort. Kalapatthar offers one of the best views of Mount Everest, along with panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks such as Pumori, Nuptse, and the Khumbu Icefall.

After spending some time at Kalapatthar, taking in the breathtaking views and capturing photos, you will descend back to Gorak Shep for a brief rest before continuing on your way down to Pheriche. The descent offers easier terrain, with the air becoming thicker and the views of the Himalayan landscape becoming even more stunning as you head lower.

Arriving in Pheriche, you’ll experience a warmer, more peaceful atmosphere. This village offers excellent facilities for rest and acclimatization before continuing your journey.
