Altitude Sickness: Essential Information
Altitude sickness is a risk when trekking at high elevations. It arises as the body adjusts to lower oxygen levels.
The three types are:
- Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
- High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)
- High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)
Early recognition and immediate action are crucial. Symptoms usually appear within 4–12 hours after ascent.
Symptoms and Management
Severity | Symptoms | Recommended Action |
---|---|---|
Mild (AMS) | Headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, trouble sleeping | Rest, stay hydrated, avoid further ascent until symptoms resolve |
Moderate (AMS) | Severe headache, persistent nausea/vomiting, shortness of breath, swelling | Immediate descent by 300–500 meters, monitor carefully |
Severe (HACE) | Confusion, difficulty walking, hallucinations, severe lethargy | Urgent descent by 500–1,000 meters, seek emergency medical help |
Severe (HAPE) | Shortness of breath at rest, chest tightness, cough (frothy or pink sputum), cyanosis | Rapid descent, emergency medical help, keep patient warm, avoid exertion |
Preventive Strategies for Altitude Sickness
- Ascend Gradually: Limit elevation gain to 300–500 meters per day above 3,000 meters.
- Schedule Acclimatization Days: Rest every 3–4 days or after gaining 800–1,200 meters.
- Climb High, Sleep Low: Ascend to higher elevations during the day, sleep at lower elevations.
- Prioritize Descent: Always descend if severe symptoms occur.
- Avoid Ascending with Symptoms: Do not continue to ascend if AMS symptoms appear.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, including electrolytes.
- Avoid Overexertion: Limit strenuous activities at high altitudes.
- Avoid Alcohol and Certain Drugs: No alcohol, narcotics, tranquilizers, or sleeping pills.
- Maintain a Balanced Diet: Focus on carbohydrates and balanced nutrition.
- Choose Lukewarm Foods and Fluids: Avoid very hot foods or drinks.
- Carry a First-Aid Kit: Be informed about the nearest health facilities.
