The Final Push Toward Base Camp

 

This is one of the most iconic days of the trek as you will reach the much-anticipated Everest Base Camp before returning to Gorak Shep. It’s a long day, but the thrill of standing at the foot of the world’s highest peak makes it all worth it.

  • Elevation at Lobuche: 4,940 meters (16,207 feet)

  • Elevation at Gorak Shep: 5,164 meters (16,942 feet)

  • Elevation at Everest Base Camp: 5,364 meters (17,598 feet)

  • Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles)

  • Elevation Gain: +424 meters (1,394 feet)

  • Trek Duration: 7–8 hours

The day begins with a steady ascent from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, where you’ll rest before setting out for Everest Base Camp. The path takes you alongside the mighty Khumbu Glacier, offering breathtaking views of surrounding peaks, including Pumori and Nuptse. The terrain becomes more rugged and exposed as you approach the Base Camp.

After reaching Gorak Shep, you’ll continue your trek toward Everest Base Camp, the ultimate goal of trekkers on this route. The journey from Gorak Shep to Base Camp is about 3.5 km (2.1 miles) and can take several hours due to the altitude. However, the moment you reach Everest Base Camp, you’ll be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and unforgettable views of the Khumbu Icefall and Everest itself.

After spending time at Base Camp, you’ll retrace your steps back to Gorak Shep, where you’ll spend the night. This day offers one of the most memorable experiences of your Everest trek, as you stand at the base of the world’s tallest mountain.
